Name: Aquamarine "Aqua" Swiftriver
Species: River otter
Gender: Female
Dibbun Weapon: Her father made her a little sling and stonepouch for play, but it receives only rare use from its owner.
Adult Weapon: None. If pressed in a time of need, she could force herself to take up a sling and stones, but she does not own one herself. Generally, there isn't a cause for her to have one, and she doesn't like using one or have any skill with it.
Appearance: Especially as a Dibbun, Aqua is a small creature, both in build and height. Baby fat makes her a bit stockier, but not by much. A late bloomer, she appears even smaller in adolescence, and when she does grow, she's left short, thin, and altogether on the small side, clearly not built for physical activity. Warm cocoa brown fur gives way to a creamy underbelly. Her eyes are a deep, calm brown that look a little too big for her face while she's a Dibbun. The Infirmary Sister starts drilling good posture into Aqua once she starts hanging around the Infirmary; by adulthood, it's a habit, although she subconsciously keeps from holding herself too tall.
Little Aqua is generally happy to wear a typical Dibbun smock, but if anything blue is available, it'll be her first choice. Her favorite outfit is a short blue dress, all the better because it has a pocket sewn into the skirt. She loves wandering about barepaw and avoids shoes whenever she's inside or the weather allows. She manages to keep herself fairly clean for a Dibbun, more because she doesn't like the feel of the dirt than because of any desire for cleanliness.
In adolescence, Aqua picks up a novice's habit as she trains under Redwall's Infirmary Sister, and soon after reaching adulthood she takes up the position herself and dresses in the traditional green habit of the order. She owns one pale blue dress, nothing too fancy, that she wears for special occasions, along with a simple, elegant necklace set with the stone that is her namesake. The only other jewelry she owns is her eventual wedding band that she wears on her left paw. Her day-to-day shoes are a pair of standard abbey sandals that she will secretly leave behind some warm summer days. Aqua retains the abbey habit even as her fur silvers and her underbelly greys and she retires from her official position.
Personality: Young Aqua is quieter and more obedient than the average Dibbun Against Bedtime, and she's terrified of getting into trouble. Consequently, she does have one extremely valuable DAB skill: since she's a generally good Dibbun, she can get away with almost anything. Although she doesn't plan many shenanigans herself, she tends to follow the crowd as far as kitchen raids and pillow fights go. Aqua has a good head on her shoulders and can be counted on to play fair, so she often ends up as scorekeeper rather than participant in games, much to her inward relief. A natural good listener and nurturer, she's usually a positive creature, quick to give a smile and a helping paw even if she can be overly concerned about everything.
As Aqua grows through her Dibbunhood, she begins to realize that she's different from her friends, especially other otters who tend to be more rambunctious and active. Her dislike of mischief, quiet demeanor, and better understanding of adults than other Dibbuns begin to divide her from her peers, and by the time she reaches adolescence, Aqua starts to close herself in. She's well practiced at inventing excuses for why she can't help with whatever prank or uncomfortable situation her peers have come up with, which has made her an unfortunately good liar over the seasons. Her deep desire for acceptance and strong dislike of conflict drive her to hide anything she thinks other creatures won't like or will think is unusual. She often overthinks situations due to her extreme awareness of others' thoughts and feelings. This awareness can also cause her to neglect her own wellbeing in favor of others' needs.
This self-imposed shell lasts into the beginning of Aqua's adulthood as she watches her Dibbunhood playmates leave the abbey and adventure through Mossflower and beyond while she stays behind in the Infirmary. When the Infirmary Keeper takes Aqua under wing, it's because she sees Aqua's loneliness as well as her potential for and interest in medical care. Finding her place in the Infirmary gives Aqua the start of the self-confidence she has lacked for so long, and her self-assurance is cemented in the seasons after Dannell Swiftriver, a member of Skipper's ottercrew, meets her while visiting the abbey. The friendship that forms between them slowly shows Aqua that her differences from others of her species don't make her inherently worthless to them, and she starts the process of reconciling with herself.
As she moves through young adulthood and into middle age, Aqua grows into a genuine and welcoming, if still quiet, ottermum. Her kind heart and caring nature that were with her from Dibbunhood lend themselves well to her position in the Infirmary. Her thoughtfulness and consciousness of others' feelings now lead her to treat her patients warmly instead of paralyzing her with fear of what they might be thinking of her. While her playful side can still hide behind her lingering self-consciousness, she will use a bit of lighthearted teasing with those she knows well enough. She's the most open and relaxed around family and close friends. Her dislike of conflict isn't gone, and she seeks to please those around her and more often listens than speaks her own thoughts aloud. While she is generally calm and keeps her head in a crisis despite her dislike of surprises, she can be a worrier, especially when the situation concerns the safety of her loved ones. This worry can extend to nearly everybeast but herself, and she occasionally needs a reminder to take care of herself as well. Aqua's desire to be helpful never fades, even in old age, and she's more than happy to listen when others need someone to hear and give an occasional question or comment in the hope it'll guide them in the right direction.
History: Aqua was born in the early fall to Rhoda and Barto, an otter couple living in Redwall Abbey. Complications at Aqua's birth made it inadvisable for her mother to have any more little ones, greatly saddening her parents. When Aqua was a few seasons old, a traveler brought an orphaned squirrelbabe a couple seasons younger than her to the abbey. Aqua happened to be near the nursery, and after seeing him come in, she took to regularly looking in on him. The little squirrel quickly latched onto her, and the two became inseparable. Her parents soon decided to adopt him as the son they were unable to have. Garnet and Aqua grew up side by side. They joined DAB because Gar wanted to and Aqua claimed she did, though she didn't realize until later that her desire was more due to following what her peers were doing than what would have made her most comfortable. She was often uneasy with the mischief making her friends got up to, Gar included, but would usually tag along anyway because she was a crowd-follower and was afraid that one of her friends would get hurt.
If and when that happened, Aqua was usually the one to take her injured friend to the Infirmary, and she began to develop an interest in the work there. The Infirmary Sister noticed this quickly and began to train her, initially in simple first aid. Aqua became the go-to healer for her friends when they got hurt doing something they shouldn't have, as she had a natural talent for healing and wouldn't tattle unless the injury was more than the scratches, bumps, and bruises she knew how to handle. As she grew out of Dibbunhood, Aqua became the official Infirmary assistant and moved into the Infirmary keeper's quarters with the Sister when she grew out of the Dibbun dormitory. Her friends began to leave the abbey, and she watched her fellow otters either go off adventuring or join up with Skipper's crew. Seeing herself as too weak to even attempt at their accomplishments, Aqua threw herself into her work. Her knowledge of first aid rapidly expanded into more advanced care for injuries and sicknesses, herbs and other remedies, and whatever other information she could find. She took refuge in the Infirmary Sister and Gar when he was around, but she had few other friends and hardly dared to open up to them. While Aqua's mother preferred the quiet a bit more like Aqua herself, her father had been a member of Skipper's ottercrew before Aqua was born, and she had a secret fear that she was disappointing them.
By the time she entered into adulthood, Aqua had developed a habit of keeping her distance from the ottercrew during their periodic visits to the abbey, as she found it difficult to reconcile herself to her inability to naturally fit in with them. Over time, however, one of the crew members, Dannell Swiftriver, noticed this. Dan eventually befriended her, and their friendship allowed Aqua to be honest about the distance she felt between other otters and herself for the first time. With Dan's encouragement, Aqua slowly started to decrease the distance she had placed between herself and her peers. She admitted her fear of disappointing her parents to them and discovered it to be unfounded. During this time, the Infirmary Sister retired, and as Aqua came into her own, she took over as full-time Infirmary Keeper and joined the abbey order.
Aqua was happy to stay with the work she loved in the Infirmary. The work didn't come without its challenges, and the first patient she lost was a very hard blow even though there was little she could have done. As time passed, Dan and Aqua's relationship grew, and they were married one misty autumn morning. Dan left the ottercrew to live at Redwall with his wife, and several seasons later, the couple had a son whom they named Corin. The labor was difficult, and it quickly came to light that Aqua had inherited the conditions that had complicated her own birth. She knew its implications before the old Infirmary Sister, who had delivered Corin even though she had been an elder for seasons, advised her against having more young ones. Over time, Dan and eventually Aqua came to terms with this. Aqua regretted that her own child would not have a sibling to bond with as she did -- however, her wish was fulfilled when one of Gar's little ones came to fill that role.
Seasons passed and Aqua continued life at Redwall, spending her days at work in the Infirmary or helping elsewhere around the abbey as needed. Corin, now fully grown, joined Skipper's ottercrew as his father and grandfather had. Aqua took on an assistant in the Infirmary, eventually passing on her duties as Infirmary Keeper to him. She continued to help there as an elder, and after a long, hard winter of sickness, she finally breathed her last as early spring thawed the abbey grounds.
