I join every incarnation. sp4lyff.
Name: Tinsy Stormsight
Species: Badger
Gender: Female
Age: twenty-something
Weapons/Skills: Navigation mostly. Tinsy is, by trade, a lawyer, but is still more than capable of plotting a course. She is also good at math, public relations (to a point), and identifying the local laws and regulations at whatever port the ship happens to be at.
She is nearly hopeless with any kind of weapon, although she can hold her own in a fistfight.
Appearance: Tinsy is small for a badger. This does not mean she doesn't tower over almost any other creature. She does tend to look up at others of her own species, to her constant irritation.
Her physical features are not that impressive. She is built like a small boulder, wide in the shoulders and solid in stance. Otherwise Tinsy is fairly normal. Her fur is mainly grey, with black-tipped guardhairs, lightening to white on her face. Her main unusual feature is that her stripes are reddish-brown in color instead of the usual black. This, according to Tinsy, is caused by genetic erythrism, which apparently runs in her family.
Tinsy has dark grey eyes and squints constantly. She is nearsighted, like many badgers, but refuses to wear glasses.
She generally dresses in dark colors, with a heavy emphasis on dark grey and blue. Her clothes are often made of very fine materiel, which Tinsy can hardly afford, but she claims it is important to mantain a professional appearance. Generally, when underway, she has an assortment of charcoals, compasses (of both types), rulers, and assorted other navigational instruments on her person.
In behavior she is rather more aggressive than is necessary. Her only tone of voice is a demanding shout. She uses very long words, to make herself seem smarter.
Personality: Tinsy is, generally, rude, violent, too smart for her own good, and more or less completely amoral. Like any good lawyer, her main concern in life is herself. Unlike most, she is incapable of hiding that fact and is therefore almost universally disliked.
She is rather clever, or even brilliant. Unfortunately Tinsy never tries hide this fact, and is probably not as smart as she think she is. Moreover, Tinsy is only smart in certain areas - if asked a trivia question, or instructed to explain some small detail about weather or mathematics, she answers correctly nine out of ten times. If asked to go out and purchase a several days' supply of salt fish, well..one might as well ask an illiterate searat.
This is embarrassing to her. Actually, Tinsy's main fear in life is being embarrassed. Therefore she spends most of her waking moments trying make herself the most hated creature in Mossflower. She does this by being insufferably rude, horribly arrogant, and vaguely obnoxious. She has, as one might expect, very few friends.
Tinsy, as we mentioned, usually surrounds herself with a persona of raging temper and obnoxious arrogance, with the result that she is nearly universally disliked and feared by those she meets. Her mantra is 'get down to business', and she does this with a fervor rarely seen in other beasts. Tinsy's business is, of course, information, and her main tactic is threats..there's nothing like having a large, loose cannon of a badger telling you what will happen if you don't do what she says. Tinsy is, needless to say, very good at getting what she wants out of people.
She's dedicated to any job she ends up doing, and goes to any length to make sure it gets done. Tinsy tends to go for the underhanded approach before simply asking..she's more likely to trick someone or beat something out of them than request their assistance. This mostly springs from a strong belief that beasts are basically evil, and therefore must be dealt with in a basically evil way. Of course, that is more or less a pessimistic idea, but Tinsy mostly deals with vermin and the like and therefore doesn't have much use for the soft approach.
Unsympathetic, frightening, and arrogant are how Tinsy comes across to friends and acquaintances - they watch their mouths and attitudes around her unless they've know her for a very long time. It's rare that your average woodland creature sees a goodbeast gone wild, and even people that knew Tinsy as a dibbun step carefully around her. She is proud, angry, and never backs down from an opinion. Those who insult Tinsy tend to turn up dead or seriously injured; but, interestingly, those who insult or harm her close friends come to a similar end. Tinsy may be a little over the top, but she's no vermin and never will be one.
In fact, Tinsy really wants to make the world better somehow, so that a typical beast of any species can walk unhindered through Mossflower without fear of attacks by anyone - vermin or goodbeast. Tinsy knows evil, but she's fairly well-acquainted with good as well, at least enough that she attempts both at once. The result? A giant headache.
History:
Tinsy was born to a minor lordling's family in the southern plains. She was the oldest of a litter of five, and quickly ended up being the leader of the group as well. Her parents, taking note of her eagerness to read and write, decided to send her off to Redwall Abbey for her education. Tinsy arrived at the age of nine seasons, already quite certain she was the smartest creature in Mossflower, and began her studies.
Unlike most, Tinsy acually showed an interest in learning to do things. Then she ran into the dibbun gang of Redwall and became a member. This did not affect her studies, but it did become obvious that the badger showed an unprecedented talent for..rule-breaking, without actually breaking any rules. Here she made her only friend, or what might be a friend, an otter named Canyonbud.
As she grew older this talent did not go away. Fortunately, Tinsy decided that the best use of her abilities would be to become a lawyer. Therefore she graduated from dibbun school and devoted her energy to studying Mossflowerian Law. At the age of twenty she took her first case, Redwall v.s. GOUISM and won, on the side of Redwall. Thus she set a new precedent for deciding battles based on law and not seiges, and also inflated her ego to tremendous proportions.
For three years she never lost a case. Then Tinsy decided it was a good idea to defend one vermin warlord from another. This case she lost, due to the fact that it degenerated into pitched battle. The Long Patrol broke up the argument in the courtroom. Tinsy Stormsight decided it was in her best interest to follow them to Salamandastron. On her arrival she discovered that there was now a rather large price on her head. The badger lord suggested that she leave the country.
Therefore, Tinsy spent a brief period of time studying navigation and decided to sign aboard an aging ship, in order to give the vermin of Mossflower Wood time to forget about her..
She suggested Canyonbud accompany her, but the otter declined, claiming 'seasickness.'
Roleplay Sample:
*old sea patrol post from a while ago, somewhat dated. Tinsy has a slightly different history every time I write it down. Therefore, despite the fact that she's been in every SP since it was invented on DAB 15, she has really only been in it once?
Really, Tinsy hadn't planned to come to this little 'patrol meeting.' She didn't really need to, first of all - she was navigator and did as little fighting (or, actually, work) as possible. Also, she could only think of a few things Sunset would want anyone for down by the river. Swimming during the late fall was not the badger's thing at all. She was dressed extremely warmly, even though the day would not seem too cold to others - long sleeves, jacket, and heavy boots.
Anyone else would have been the object of ridicule for this, but nobody made fun of Tinsy anymore. First of all, she was much bigger than most of the crew. Second, the last beast to make fun of her had found himself stuck on helm for nine hours as Tinsy cruised the Windsurfer through a succesion of large squalls.
In any case, the reason she'd actually come down to the river was to snicker while the others got hypothermia. Her respect for Sunset was minimal, except that the dormouse had a certain amount of leadership ability. Tinsy had been in and out of the Sea Patrol for years, since the only boat the group had was a leaky sloop called Waveblade, captained by an otter whose name she only vaguely recalled. In any case, Captains and Ships came and went. None of it was new to her.
The powerful young badger ambled down the little path that ran down to the river, a thick book describing next year's tides clutched under one arm. She paused briefly at the sound of a splash from beyond the thick trees shading the riverbank, gray eyes mildly interested. From the sound of it, she'd been right about Sunset's intentions.
She considered whether or not is was even worth her while to go down there, and sighed. May as well put in an appearance, that way nobody though she'd gone into..hibernation, or something. Sometimes it was tempting to do that, just to show 'em. Then again, if she did, who knew if she'd wake up again. It wasn't as if she could trust Canyonbud to keep an eye out for assassins or something. The otter was, to put it lightly, not all there.
And should've been left at Redwall.
By the time this resigned, somewhat irritated thought flew through Tinsy's mind, the stunted creature had already arrived on the riverbank. She adjusted the tome in her right arm, studied the scene in front of her thoughtfully, and smirked.
The dormouse was paddling around like some kind of miniature otter, doubtless shivering in the water. Also there was some hare standing around whom Tinsy didn't know and had little interest in. One of those over-militarized Long Patrol types, no doubt. Annoying creatures.
She raised an eyebrow and stared across the water at the swimming Sunset.
"I assume I've been called down here for a reason..Captain?" The hesitation at the end of the sentence suggested, plainly, that she'd added the last word on as sort of an afterthought. Not true. Tinsy had every intention of calling the mouse 'Captain.' Still, it looked better if the other thought Tinsy had some issue with it. The badger wasn't much for following, and, although she had no interest in any leadership positions in the patrol, it would be out of character to make this known.
