Name:Madrigal Viscaria Rosewood
Species:Fox
Gender:Female
Age: 21
Weapons/Skills:Madrigal is primarily an intellectual, not too skilled with weapons or any sort of combat really, in fact the most dangerous thing she has ever held before looking to join the patrol would probably be a vegetable peeler. Despite this inexperience Maddy has decided to at least arm herself with a dagger, a small affair mainly chosen due to its ornamental value, although it is by no means just a trinket. Much more comfortable with the bow than the sling, Maddy is in actual fact not very adept with either weapon, a rather ironic situation as the foxmaid’s reserved and almost cowardly nature demands that she stay away from the combat as much as possible. However, Madrigal proves a much more reliable team member when faced with anything to do with logic, learning or literary challenges. The vixen is well read and as such is considered a highly intellectual fox, and even though she was brought up as an abbeybeast and with a rather more shy personality, she still retains a sense of the infamous fox cunning. Maddy is also light of paw and so can manage very stealthy movements.
Appearance:A slender foxmaid with little to no muscle, Maddy is certainly not designed for the heavy lifting element of life. She is slightly smaller than your average fox, with a slightly overlarge brush-like tail which gives a sense of disproportional sizing. Her fur has a golden red quality with undertones of fiery orange and darker brown. This majestic mix of colours fades to a dark grey-black about the paws and limbs, creating a ‘socks’ effect, and also faintly about the ears. Her underbelly fur is a rather dirty cream colour with the occasional flecks of grey. Her eyes are hazel with flecks of amber about and a dark brown ring around the outside, her eyes are rather large and are a definite tell for her mood, as they narrow drastically when she is annoyed, widen to the size of saucers when alarmed, and are just plain snitches when it comes to lying.
In terms of her attire Maddy has decided to shun her abbey attire in favour of gear more worthy of a seafaring vixen. She wears a dark blue bandanna and a black jerkin. About her middle is a blue sash in which she carries her dagger, and diagonally across shoulder to waist she has her quiver strapped to her back. The quiver is only really worn when she feels the need to arm herself with bow and arrow, although due to the busy lives of the sea patrollers she finds this to be a little too often. She has also found a place for a couple of pieces of jewellery about her person with a silver necklace and a golden earring both present, however she has not been so brash as to try to decorate her own body with tattoos.
Personality: Madrigal is a rather reserved character, much less likely to contribute than she probably should, however when she gets going on a subject she can talk for a little too long. She is also very indecisive and can spend overlong amounts of time deliberating over what options she should take. This dithering attitude has caused otherbeasts to become irritated with the foxmaid, which has also had a negative outlook on her confidence and has made her feel a little intimidated when asked to make a choice. This makes Maddy much more of a team member than a team leader, although she does like to offer advice when counselled, even adopting a rather know-it-all attitude when she encounters subjects of her interest. In keeping with her shy attitude Maddy is much more of a careful thinker, hesitating before rushing into a situation, partly due to cautious thinking and partly due to cowardice.
In terms of her dealings with otherbeasts, Madrigal generally tends to gain acceptance through just being there to help. Through her meeker personality Maddy sometimes manages to get herself out of the way of pawpointing, either by just innocently stepping back or through having a knack for sneaking quietly away unnoticed.
History: Madrigal has an unknown past. Brought into the abbey, a woodland orphan and a very young child, almost a baby. The young foxmaid was found alone in the woods but Redwallers who had been out to gather certain herbs and plants from the forest. The foxmaid was taken in by the kind creatures due to her being only a young one, however many were wary still and she would often find herself the butt end of taunting from some of the less welcoming dibbuns. The hostility from some other young ones majorly undermined her confidence, and despite the more friendly attitudes some displayed she would still retreat from most contact. She joined the ranks of DAB in a rather desperate attempt to gain wider acceptance and, contrary to her initial belief, made a fair amount of firm friends, the two main ones being her best friends Burfle and Brookfill. It was thanks to these friends of hers that she became a little more open to adventurous activities and mischievous ideas, however she was never really one to get involved in the major DAB plots not wanting the elders to build up a perception of her as a ‘villain’.
In her ‘teenage’ seasons Madrigal was not quite as shy as she was at the beginning of her time in DAB, however she was still very much the quiet background fox, helping out around the abbey, especially in the library where she would often just sit quietly and read up on subjects that interested her. She was not alone though, many times having the company of Burfle and Brooky who would come up and join her to read about tales of adventure and to look at old maps of Mossflower. Though her two friends often spoke of leaving the abbey, Maddy quietly refused any attempts to cajole her away from the safe haven, finding it to be too much of a comfort to her and a large part of her lifestyle. It was such that Maddy came to see many of her friends leave the abbey without her, embarking on their adventures while the vixen remained safe inside the large red stone walls, keeping herself to herself mainly and helping to tend to the library, quiet work that suited her just fine.
Maddy kept up this routine for a few seasons, rarely venturing out of the abbey save to help out the infirmary by collecting herbs, or to help the librarian or recorder document important information that had to be gathered from Mossflower and its inhabitants. However Maddy still caught up on the tales told by her friends whenever they would stop by the abbey. It was through one of these ‘catch-ups’ that the vixen was told about the sea patrol. She had been recently fighting against the concept that she was a dusty old bookworm, even at her young age, and had often been told that she spent far too much time in the library for one so young. Having heard all the amazing tales of adventure from her old comrades she also became intrigued by the prospect of travelling. It was this build up of pressure and excitement that eventually lead the vixen to decide to sign up for this ‘sea patrol’ in her younger adult years. She spent some time with Burfle and Brookfill, travelling and gaining experience, learning how to handle a weapon and various survival skills. So it was that Madrigal left the abbey finally, leaving behind her habit and garbing herself in a new outfit so as to try and sever the ties that would inevitably try to draw her back from her decision. The foxmaid journeyed with her friends once more, heading this time straight for the headquarters of the sea patrol, intending to join up with the crew and show those at the abbey just who was a dusty bookworm, and who was an adventuring vixen.
Roleplay Sample:
*Madrigal fidgeted with her small dagger as she sat against the rock, looking frantically about her as noises echoed about. She flinched amd covered her head as a mass of shapes passed over her head, but settled back when she realised that it was only a flock of birds winging their way across the plains. She watched their rapidly disappearing shapes for a moment, shielding her eyes against the glare of the hot midsummer sun. The day was growing longer and still she hadn’t heard from the others, they had left her in charge of their small makeshift camp on the edge of the forest and had then promptly left her to go and ‘sort a few things out’ as Burfle had put it. She didn’t normally mind being left to herself, but being left alone in the middle of the wilderness was an entirely different matter to the situation she was used to. A rustling in the nearby undergrowth made her start. Fumbling to get the dagger out of its sheath and standing upright, tense and alert, the vixen mumbled a nervous hail.*
Wh-who’s there? Burfle? Brooky? Whoever it is, I’m armed! *She felt her paws shake as she turned slowly, eyes darting about for any further signs of movement. The rustling died away and the vixen had to wait for a few minutes until she was convinced that any threat was past. Sighing heavily and flopping back down to the ground she suddenly noticed that one of the packs was gone, stolen most likely. Groaning silently Maddy berated herself for being so easily tricked, now it was her fault that they had possibly lost valuable equipment. She was about to check to see what was in the remaining packs when she heard sounds from both sides.
Backing herself up against the rock she held the dagger level, hoping that Burfle and Brooky would turn up soon, wherever they were. Once again she called out to her unseen company.*
I’m warning you, I’m armed and ready for you.
Ahoy, Maddy! What’s going on?
*The vixen whirled around and found herself almost about to skewer a familiar face. Burfle was looking at the dagger in her paw with more of a look of surprise than fear. Lowering the weapon Madrigal started to stammer out an apology about the missing pack but was cut across.*
I take it we’ve lost a pack? Well I think I know where that’s gone.
*Maddy watched open mouthed as Brooky stepped out of the other bush, holding an old shrew by the scruff of his neck like a naughty young one. The shrew held the missing pack in his paws and was struggling wildly. The foxmaid flinched as he attempted to bite savagely at her. She laughed nervously*
Uh, I guess this is the thief then… a bit feisty…isn’t he?
