I'm just going to come out and say it. I think DABs RP format stinks Whoa whoa, hold your pitchforks ye cranky old elders (JAZZY)! I have done my fair share of roleplaying under the current system! I just think that the current formula of "asterisks around actions" instead of quotes around dialogue, is pointlessly confusing and a hassle to format. Not only is it still something a (relatively) experienced paw like me has to consciously remember every time I post (but not in quests, discussions, and sometimes not in quick RPs!), but I think it's also just a meaningless barrier to entry to new users, who have to learn a format that, correct me if I'm wrong, is used nowhere else online. I for one think that roleplays going forward should -at the very least- have the option to write in traditional quotes around dialogue, nothing around actions format. We already write that way for quests! I get that the asterisk around actions has a long history for DAB, but I don't think it should be a sacred cow that everyone still has to stick to 23 years down the line. I think the magic of DAB comes from the fun Redwall discussions and stories we make, and not the format we have to write in. What is everyone's thoughts? Should we retire the asterisks rule or keep it?

*lowers pitchfork and gives a cranky pout (rotfl!)*
Just kidding! XD For what it's worth, in ye olde early days of proboards/voyforums RPing, I can see how it was helpful/the norm due to limited formatting options and the predominance of Script writing vs. Paragraph writing. And w1th every1 writing like l33t on teh internet it was kewl mybe idk. (Kids these days rping on Discord w/ fancy Markdown formatting & emojis & animated reaction pics don't know how creative we had to be in the wild west of internet days! haha) Tho even as a rp veteran where it was already the established RP format when I joined, now I'm curious to the true origin of asterisk format! So, my two cents are fine with retiring the rule, and most of all agree with the emphasis on the fun of RPing over formatting etc.! Like they say in PotC, more guidelines than actual rules~ Also would it be maybe worth having somewhere some optional quick reference guidelines (like how we generally use bold text to reference another reply's dialogue etc.)? Also also maybe keep one legacy board/thread where it's asterisks rule only for anyone who's nostalgic or wants to try it for the sake of continuing the 23 (almost 24?) year old tradition

I'm not a veteran with the DAB RP format but my one cent is that I always found it a strange format to write in as opposed to simply writing normally. I can see where it comes from a bit though now, Jasmine!
I'm all for retiring it; least as the MUST USE OR ELSE format. In the end, as long as everyone in the RP uses the same format, I don't think it matters much WHAT format that is.

Even if I haven’t been here a lot, I believe that the old RPing format of DAB is what i prefer (until I get the hang of it)! But of course, I wouldn’t mind either if we changed the format to an easier way that we all prefer. Heehee!

Heh, I always use both the asterisks and quotation marks guess i'm extra. I do believe that this is the only site out there that uses the asterisk rules. I am up for no longer requiring that formatting. It'll honestly be easier to remember. Although all my years of lurking and reading old DAB RPs involves that format, so perhaps having a nostalgia board where all the RPs require that would be nice
