Name: Jake "Green" Spike
Species: Hedgehog
Heavy Book (dibbun weapon): One of a few possessions left with Jake. The book titled Jigs for Hurdy Gurdy* is a rare illustrated manual for the instrument known as the Hurdy Gurdy. The book describes the history, tools, materials & methods for the construction, maintenance and playing of the instrument.
*Hurdy Gurdy are stringed instruments not to be confused with the Hardee Gurdee played by Dorothea Duckfontein Dillworthy or indeed a Haredee Gurdee played by Bellscut Oglecrop Obrathon Ragglewaithe Audube Baggscut (Boorab) The Fool.
Axe (adult weapon): To construct a quality Hurdy Gurdy a number of sharp wood working tools are required. Jake was gifted an Axe his own height as a dibbun for this purpose. Now as a hedgehog of many seasons it is his oldest friend. Jake can no longer remember who gifted it to him as he wandered Mossflower Woods but it was found on him with his book and satchel by Redwall folk.
Appearance (dibbun): As a dibbun Jake was a short squat fellow, fur and spikes a dark brown. Beetle black eyes and a wiggly twitching snout that was constantly running. While young, Jake was prone to sickness and spent much time in bed. In-between sickness and health Jake gained size but not height. He wobbled and looked comical in comparison to his friends who were most of the time out of bed running about. He sports green dungarees or smock and green twine in his spikes. The green twine would remain for all his days.
Appearance (adult): In Jake's adult years he retained his girth and sported a great green waxed homespun tunic tied with a brown hemp cord. His axe which as a youngster matched him in height now only comes up to his waist and sits in a red girdle. Jake carries a large haversack with all manner of oddments attached to it and stored within also.
Personality (dibbun): Jake is known as a quiet, reflective sort who enjoys books and the company of elders. He is fascinated by pictures and stories. Not quite a loner but lacking the boisterous nature of many of his companions. A calm hedgehog who tends to stay back a bit, never the first to leap into things.
Personality (adult): As an adult Jake is quietly intelligent though lively in debate. He has an untroubled, ponderous gait when he walks wether he is heavily burdened or with nought but a walking stick. When remarked on by other creatures of Mossflower's woods & streams he is known for good humour and hospitality.
History (dibbun - adult): Jake was found by Redwall Abbey folk as he wandered aimlessly through Mossflower. There were no clues as to his parentage beyond his axe and a book on hurdy gurdy. Inside the book the initials J.S Spike were written, so the Gatekeeper had the honor of naming the sickly hedgehog Jake Spike. Spike was a common hedgehog surname so Jack never worked out who his family or ancestors were as a child and as an adult though he found clues there was no certainty. So it was that Jake was given a bunk and a place at the table in Redwall Abbey. He was well fed and well liked but often required the assistance of the infirmary. Oft than not Jake was ill, stuck in bed he was read to a lot and he was taught letters and numbers early...though he never really liked numbers. If you needed a trivial fact, a useful bit of knowledge, Jake "green" Spike was the go-to amongst his dibbun friends/fiends. What with reading so many books he often had a good idea about any old thing, but it would need to be coaxed out of him.
Jake's illness could possibly have been a result of reading late and frequent late night visits to the library or the gatehouse. He managed to grow into a quiet, large ol hedgehog. He left the Abbey at a young age as he had read most of the books and he wanted to explore the lands about Mossflower, there were large gaps in what the Abbey folk knew about the woods. It was his quest...had he made it but 3 days before encountering a rowdy bunch of shrews. Members of the GUOSIM (guerrilla union of shrews in mossflower) could be heard arguing half a mile away. Wishing to learn more Jake entered their camp and after setting off a counter-argument as to the right way to wash dishes the current Log-a-log declared Jake a disturber of the peace. As an adult Jake often blundered into frightful situations such as these.
The one that lasted the longest was from when he came across his own kind for the first time. River-hogs they were and though none of the five boisterous raft sailors were known to Jake they took him onboard as the lucky 6th member of the crew. These buccaneers roamed the rivers collecting apples and ingredients for their mulled, dry, sweet, tart ciders. Each wore bandana according to rank, Jake spent many years with the 6. The operation in time needed permanent land based ports of call, and Jake an one other opted to start the first in Mossflower close to Redwall. Jake built a log cabin with a jetty nearby for the River-hogs crafts. Jake with the help of knowledgable Redwall orchard folk started an apple grove an apiary. Jake built his own hurdy gurdy and used to play when he wasn't writing, gardening or tending bees. He often had guests and kept a large library with his surplus books kindly on loan to Redwall. When the call to arms presented itself Jake donned his axe and stood as tall as his squat self could, swig the strongest of his cider and charge, though this would be a last resort if he couldn't outsmart his foe. Most of Jake visitors wanted stories, cures or answers to difficult riddles/conundrums. Jake was to die shortly after a strong mulled cider during a very cold winter when he was old and white spiked. Those who found him realised he had pickled himself in cider knowing that to be the best method of preservation besides smoking, salting or sugaring. To this day honey roasted apples in cider are called "pickled jakes".
