Name: Kaede Dawnshadow
Species: Red Fox
Gender: Female
Dibbun Weapon: N/A Kaede was not in Redwall during her childhood
Adult Weapon: Kaede primarily uses throwing knives and poisons, as they are quiet, effective, and easy to carry or conceal. She carries them in a set of pouches on her belt. She has a set of fifteen knives, though is regularly having to commission new ones made. Her poisons are kept in little vials or wrapped in bits of cloth, so she does not touch them. In her later seasons, she learns to use a short sword, but rarely uses it. The weapons are all very plain, with no adornments, as she thinks of them only as 'means to an end.'
Appearance:
Kaede, overall, could be described as 'average' on the first glance. Her fur was the typical red-orange of her species, with dark paws and a white belly and tailtip. Though not the tallest, she was also not short, and her weight was just a little under her peers, but never enough to be alarming. With dark chocolate-brown eyes and the typical long, thin limbs of her species, Kaede always appeared rather plain.
As a child, Kaede wore a brown dress, typical of her social status, and once she became of an age to determine her area of study, she began to wear the white shawl that was commonly known of someone studying the healing arts. After her master deemed that Kaede had surpassed apprentice teachings, she was given a green broach to hold her shawl (she keeps it throughout her life, though it beings tarnish at the edges). During this time, her friend, Zane, gifted her with a small, thin knife. It was forbidden for those who were not soldiers to carry weapons, but due to it's miniscule size, it was deemed a tool instead, and she was only ever seen cutting bandages or chopping herbs with it. However, she kept it razor sharp by honing its edge on the bottoms of pottery mugs after dinner, working it in her lap where it could not be seen. This would later end up being the weapon all her throwing knives were based upon.
After the 'incident,' Kaede's attire and physical state changed. For the remainder of the time in her homeland, she wore the rags of a beggar, which were common outside the capital city. After gaining enough money, she got her first outfit; a deep purple tunic, and black canvas breeches. She dyed her old dress a dark grey-purple, and turned her shawl into a makeshift belt, so that guards would not recognize her from a distance. On her voyage to the coast, the first of her arm tattoos were done. She had her cloak made upon arrival to the shanty-town, and her belt (and its numerous pouches) were an impulse buy. Before, she often curled in upon herself when seated, and stooped when standing, with a looseness in her posture. No longer being properly fed, she lost some of the little bits of fat on her body, and her paranoia lent her body tension, akin to that of a bowstring. Her once lazily hooded eyes forever remained sharp and quick, roving her environment constantly for signs of danger. This fear led to feral, darting movements of her body, propelled mostly by her long legs.
As her life went on, tattoos flooded her arms, and the iconic images of the sun and moon came to rest on her cheekbones. This determined that the fur would never grow back in those areas, which was fine with her, as it made less noise. Shortly after this, she gained a short sword and a limited ability to use it, in the case that close combat was inevitable. Very few scars littered her body, and those that existed were mostly on her arms, marring the images there. However, her biggest injury would constantly show; she was struck in the jaw, and the injury never set correctly, leaving her mouth slightly lopsided and parted, as well as a chipped fang.
Personality: (I'll try to split this as best I can, I'm sorry for any confusion.)
Kaede went by two names in her lifetime. Her birth name was Kaede Mistweaver, and her self-imposed title later became Kaede Dawnshadow. Though the same creature physically, the two became completely separate emotional and spiritual entities.
When she was young, Kaede was known to be very patient, collected, gentle, and cautious. Though shy and inquisitive, she was rather charming to anyone that could convince her to open up. In a home situation that was not ideal (living with only her mother, as her father had joined the army and had deserted during his first combat situation), she did not share much personal information about herself unless forced or felt completely safe about doing so. One such creature that was able to calm her was her best friend, Zane. They were both of the same social standing, and were often seen together as kits.
After the murder of Zane (which she would refer to as the most 'haunting day of my life'), she detached the entire being of Kaede Mistweaver. Most of her past characteristics became more perverse and cold; her caution became calculation, her gentleness precision, and her patience dwindling to a point to being near nonexistent. This persona was her more go-to one, as she felt that her main downfall was simply caring, and she named it 'Dawnshadow,' her self-loathing at her actions showing through. Though most saw this name as a reflection of her profession, it was actually a dark satire, forever to remind her that she would be forever chasing 'dawn' (the forgiveness of the dead), and always slightly behind it.
Yet, she was unable to completely sever ties to the creature she was before, and this was simply lopped off and left within her being to corrupt. To Kaede, this manifests as a constant series of whispering in her mind; the dark, hateful commentary of the personality she had developed ('Dawnshadow'), and the scraps of her humanity ('Mistweaver'). This inner dialogue remains a constant throughout her life, she represses most of the memories from her past, learning to ignore the internal battle. In doing this, she became more like the 'Dawnshadow' part of her mind in her instinct and actions, as well as obtaining some of that personality's dark, dry humor.
Towards the end of her life, she seemed to realize that she was striving for an impossible task, and though she does not regret her actions, she begins to open up to others. Her skewed logic tells her that, regardless that she is unable to feel remorse for her misdeeds, but wants to instead leave some kind of legacy behind. Though she refuses to admit it, she feels that her her tale may warn others against impulsive actions, and begins to write the full story down, relying on both of her personas to fill in the gaps of her memory. The tale is never finished, but the action of attempting to do so brings her solace.
She regains full control of herself the night of her death, fully embracing the 'Mistweaver' part of her mind for the first time since her youth. As she realizes the full impact of what she has done, she finally does come to regret it.
