Choose a roleplaying activity from the list below and complete it in 300 words. The post must be within fifteen words of the word count goal (that is, the post must be between 285 and 315 words). To help add words, try thinking about adding description and emotion to the post. To help remove words, try checking whether anything repeats itself and removing phrases that don't add much to the post. There are other ways to lengthen or shorten posts -- these are just some examples. Not sure how many words you have? No problem! DAB has a built-in word counter in the bottom right corner of the reply box. Complete at least two scenarios to earn the Sharpshooter achievement badge for your profile. If you'd like in-depth critique on this activity, feel free to ask for it. - escape a bath
- try to swim across the pond
- swipe a treat from the kitchen windowsill
- chase down a butterfly
- play hide-and-seek in the orchard
- start a snowball fight
- sneak out at night to go stargazing
- hide a secret treasure
- help with the fall harvest
- draw a picture for the abbot

Doing the 'start a snowball fight one. Might overlap with 'escape a bath,' lol. And whew, barely managed to keep it inside the word count. xD
---
*Snowballs fights were a favored Dibbun activity during midwinter, though often ones that were frowned upon with the general knowledge that cold, wet little ones meant lots of crying, sick little ones. However, the band of Dibbuns paid no heed, squeaking and cheering as they pranced through the frozen grounds under the watchful eye of one of the Abbey's Brothers.
One of the frontrunners was an oddity; most of the babes were bundled into hats and scarves, some with little mittens over paws. However, Crystal seemed to have been born with winter in mind. The foxmaid only wore a scarf out of insistence by the elders, and the hat had already been lost to the ice. Her thick white pelt fluffed up in defiance against the chill, and while her playmates shivered she gleefully bounded around the frozen orchard on all fours, tackling any babe into the snow whom happened to be in her way. Here and there, a few tossed snowballs, a good number aimed in the fox's direction, but they few that landed were taken with grace and humility.
A few minutes passed of the game before she sat upright, ears twitching. One of the previously tackled Dibbuns, a overtly fussy squirrel, had ran to the Brother with frost-coated whiskers and teary eyes. In turn, the stern mouse had fixed his gaze on her, and carefully began his voyage over the icy terrain towards her. Oh no... She had to find a way to stop his progress and flee... An idea occurred to her, and a wicked grin lit up her features as she whispered to those around her.
The elder opened his mouth to speak as he neared, but was cut short by a screech of 'Fire!' And in the ensuing raid of frozen projectiles, nobody seemed to notice as Crystal, still on all fours and bounding, vanished into the bushes, cackling.*

You did just get under the wire there, Crys. xD Nicely done; you've got yourself a badge. Sorry I forgot to give it to you until now. That makes ten badges for you, so you've also earned another one for that.

*The young squirrelmaid held her breath as she peered around the door from the dormitory into the hall, slowly exhaling when she found it empty. Shoeless, her claws clicked on the stone floor as she scampered down the dark corridor. The metal handle was cool beneath her paw as she eased the door to the Great Hall open as well, slipping into the gap and slowly closing that door behind her, too. Red and purple moonlight danced over her green habit as she ran to the door leading outside, braver now that the grown-ups were further away and she was so close.
The night air was cool, a slight breeze tickling her face, and she turned her face up, towards the sky, as the door shut behind her. Pinpoints of light winked at her, some bright and large, other more shy, keeping their distance, holding the formations she knew only by sight, not by name, though the Recorder had tried to teach her. She had her own names for them--the rabbit, the chestnut leaf, the robin on her nest--and the old mouse had pushed his glasses further up his nose and sighed with a grin when she pointed them out to him on his piece of parchment.
She hitched up her robe as climbed up the steps to the northern ramparts, glancing behind her at the Abbey grounds to make truly sure she wouldn't be spotted. Then she turned to the wilderness, standing on tiptoes to fold her arms on top of the wall and lay her chin atop them. The northern stars were less familiar, and she gazed at them, concentration in the slant of her head, as if to carve them into her consciousness.* I know you're out there, Mother. *She whispered.* May the stars guide you home.
***
Hit it exactly. I'm proud of myself. Sneaking out to stargaze, in case it wasn't already clear.

Post by Aurelias & Vernados on Aug 27, 2016 15:07:53 GMT -5
*Aurelias had just arrived at the Abbey late at night coming from his isolated home on an adventure. Staring up at the magnificent wonder of an Abbey, he jumped around excitedly.*
Well well well, what have we got here?
*Aurelias almost jumped out of his fur from hearing the voice around him, twirling around he was facing a tall, thin mouse. Right behind the mouse came a badger, with completely grayed hair. Aurelias was confused about his surroundings already, as he hadn't seen anybody but his mom, literally ever! After examining him, the badger started to speak, (more like bellow).*
This little squirrel is filthy, straight to the bath tub!
*Suddenly, the badger picked up Aurelias tenderly but swiftly, and carried him to a small room inside the wondrous redwalled Abbey. The soft but firm grip of the badger felt comfortable to Aurelias, and he sighed happily, forgetting that these beasts were complete strangers. The badger opened the door and Aurelias thought he saw a pot full of bubbling clear stew.*
Ack! Wat is dat? Wet me go, me being cooked!
*Aurelias struggled as hard as he could, thrashing around ferociously, or ferociously he thought. His efforts weren't working very well against the badgers firm grip. The badger grumbled, ignored him, and struggled to put Aurelias into the tub. When Aurelias plunged into the hot water, he decided that he in fact was being cooked and tried to run. The badger grumbled to herself as loudly as she could.*
Of course, we'll never find a single dibbun that will cooperate in the bathtub! What is it with them?
*The thin mouse tried to shrug, while wincing at Aurelias's attempts to escape the bathtub. Aurelias knew his efforts were going to mush, but he wouldn't give up, he did not want to become stew.*

Post by Burfle, Brookfill & Madrigal on Sept 6, 2016 15:38:25 GMT -5
A scenario for each character. How many badges can I get in a day? Let's find out! ____________________________________________________________________________
Burfle's (almost) bath time:
*Squelching pawsteps echoed in the great hall, accompanied by soft thuds as a young and very muddy squirrel was frog-marched through the great hall by the imposing figure of the badgermum. The two beast procession made its way towards the stairs leading up towards the dormitories, squelching and thudding and grumbling and lecturing. Burfle shot sullen glares at all and sundry who passed by, fuming at having been caught by the matriarch right as he was about to crown his wonderful artwork. He'd thought his mud picture of the abbot was brilliant. The badgermum had thought less of it, especially considering the long droopy nose and the comically large ears that were the major features of the artwork. She'd made her objections known and had immediately begun to drag him off for a dreaded bath. Burfle wasn't going to have any of it however, and he was already plotting his escape attempt. All he needed was a convenient distraction.
Luckily for the troublemaker, help was not too far away. Spotting a fellow DAB member, Burfle exchanged a look with the mouse. He lost sight of his fellow conspirator as he moved on, however he knew that his intentions were clear. As soon as he heard the sound of an almightly clatter, Burfle resisted the temptation to turn and look at the source. Instead, whilst the badgermum had swivelled swiftly around to see what the commotion was, the squirrel dashed underneath one of the tables that had been set out for the afternoon meal. He made a dash down the length of the table, hoping that he could make his escape by the time the badgermum had turned back and seen his vanishing act. However, as he reappeared from under the table a gruff shout and heavy paws lent speed to his paws.*
____________________________________________________________________________
Brooky's butterfly chase
*She had been sensibly waiting near the orchard, ready to help the abbey gardener check up on the trees as part of an 'outdoors education'. However, waiting was boring, and the brightly-coloured butterfly that had flitted past her muzzle was much more attention-grabbing than a bunch of trees. What had begun as mere curiosity and restlessness had spiralled out of control into a mad chase across the ground of the abbey. The ottermaid tried everything she could to get closer to the beautiful insect, skipping and jumping every time that the butterfly flew high, coming to a sudden stop when it landed on a flower or on the stone walls. She giggled merrily, full of energy on the warm sunny afternoon. Unfortunately, the ottermaid hadn't noticed the fact that she was heading rapidly in the direction of the pond. With her head pointed firmly up towards the sky, tracking the butterfly with rapt attention, Brooky soon found herself thrown completely off balance as her paws sank into the bank side. With a yelp of surprise and a few stumbling steps, her arms windmilled furiously in the air, trying in vain to claw her back to safety as she toppled unceremoniously backwards into the shallows, landing on her rear amidst a spray of water.
Dripping wet, she blew water droplets off of her whiskers grumpily. She was less fazed by her accidental bath, and more annoyed that she had lost sight of the butterfly. As she grumbled to herself, the delicate insect fluttered down, and perched obliviously on the very end of her muzzle. Brooky's eyes crossed, focusing on the little insect, and her bad mood was immediately forgotten as she watched the butterfly waft its wings gently. She remained transfixed by the sight, and in absolute serenity.*

Well done, Burfle! 303 and 299. I wonder if Maddy's will be right on the button? You've been awarded 2 badges - 1 for Hit the Mark, and another for earning 5 (which I think you should've had already, whoops!)

Post by Barkfur on Jun 17, 2018 5:19:45 GMT -5
I did snowball fight and the drawing one. hope ye like em!
THIS! IS! REDWALL!
**Barkfur watched slowly as the band of dibbuns passed the eastern ramparts. it was winter so Redwall was covered in a thick sheet of snow. Seeing a group of elders in the orchard, he smiled wickedly. He could start a commotion. clad in winter camouflage northlands attire, along with a scarf and boots, he headed up to the dorm. the first thing that he picked up was a bunch of slings, the second thing was wood and supplies for a ballista. Rushing to the wallgates, he began making the ballista using plans he found helping sister Zoe clear out the abbey archives for another season. he was priming the string when a member of DAB (a mouse) rushed up to him and asked,**
dat looks good! may we help ye?
** we? who said anything about we? Barkfur thought, but as the mouse gestured to a score of dibbuns on the walltop. Barkfur knew he had a perfect team. his leadership skills kicking in, he directed the dibbuns to start the ballista frame. after a while the frame was completed so the dibbuns continued with the ammunition, rolling enormous snowballs. once all ballistae related tasks were finished, he ordered all dibbuns to gear up on slings. within seconds he had himself a battalion. smiling devilishly, he gestured for the ballista to be loaded. Once it was done, he personally aimed the ballista and fired it.**
HAWWAY THE BRRRAWWW!
** the giant snowball hit an elder smack in the stomach, but instead of scowling and giving all dibbuns a bath, he instead smiled and threw a snowball, hitting a levret in Barkfur's Battalion. within seconds everybody was waging war with each other, chucking snowballs, making snow forts. firing the ballista, It was great! As Barkfur nailed a mole in the stomach he smiled, the day just got way better.
th' drawing
Barkfur scribbled away at the piece of paper that lay before him, hoping that the abbot wouldn't find out, after all the picture was for him. Barkfur continued the well-drawn portrait of Abbot Sycamore by adding glasses, a stave, and sandals. Barkfur smiled, he liked this drawing. after all, he had spent a few hours, WAY after bedtime, to work and eventually finish it. Now for the engraving Barkfur thought. He first placed the paper on a small plank, then traced it with his claymore. The claymore left markings on the board that resembled the abbot greatly. Barkfur then traced the etchings with ink. now for the color Barkfur thought. He then snuck out the Dorm only to find Badgermum walking to the gatehouse. grabbing his claymore and a basket, Barkfur waited for Badgermum to enter the gatehouse then ran to a position near, but not that close to the gatehouse. As Badgermum left the gatehouse, Barkfur noticed something that she took with her THE PAINTS!? Barkfur thought NOT THE PAINTS!? but the deed was done.
Stalking Badgermum, he followed her into cavern hole. As she placed the paints on a table and went to go get some cordial, he grabbed the colors he needed along with a paintbrush but a hand grabbed his arm.It was Brother Joshua! Adrenaline was beginning to kick in as Barkfur slipped the Paints and paintbrush into his basket and prepared to run for it, but Brother Joshua did the unimaginable. he winked at Barkfur and said
I'll go and distract her matey, yew go and finish that drawing.
whew! that was close! Barkfur thought to himself. the rest was history. Barkfur returned to the dorm and filled in the colors, leaving a well crafted etching. he then delivered it with great zest and returned to the dorm. this has been a strange night Barkfur thought a strange night

The badge for this activity has been added to your profile, Barkfur -- and so has the one for earning five badges. Good work! A couple things to keep in mind: think about what a Dibbun is able to do. For example, in the second one, it sounds like Barkfur is a Dibbun, but he also has a claymore. Is it a toy one? Dibbuns probably wouldn't be allowed to have real weapons, but maybe Barkfur thinks of his as a real one. That could be an interesting detail to include that tells us more about Barkfur. Also, remember that equipment like a ballista is very large and complicated. It would be fun to read about how a Dibbun might use the ballista idea to make something Dibbun-sized that launches snowballs. Maybe a couple slings held between the battlements could launch snowballs onto the lawn, and since it would take less work, you'd be able to describe it in more detail in the same word count. Those kinds of things make RPing a Dibbun different from RPing an adult, and it's fun to explore them!

Post by Fyri on Jul 5, 2022 16:22:51 GMT -5
**Fyri had believed it to be an illusion. A trick of the mind caused by drowsiness, or else a very vivid daydream that she'd conjured up during her post-lunch lounging up in her fourth favourite firtree. (The other three(s) had been compromised by squatting squirrels and tattering tits.)
Her whiskers twitched, her nose sniffing vigouriously. A light pink tongue darted out and promptly licked her lips. Already her mouth was watering. The pine marten could almost taste it but it was nothing more than a memory of a prior taste from too long past. She needed more than that. She sprung into action. Several leaves twirled down as she stuck her head through the foliage rather violently.
There it was.
A drop of drool nearly claimed the delicacy in her name. A growl, a slow swallow when spring had not yet come. An urge rose within her. Her eyes darted up, up, down, down, left, right. Her ears perked up, alert for any abbey audio. She held her breath.
Silence.
Naught but her stomach's insistent urging at the scintiliating scent of the delicious dessert presenting itself so invitingly upon the window sil, and the eager beat of her heart as the prospect of what she would do cemented itself on her mind.
With stealth inate for her species, Fyri darted down the tree to a low hanging branch to hang from it and with one decisive swipe took her prize up to her. Normally, theft was not within her nature but a pear pie was a rare treat in an apple-infested abbey. It is only natural she could not help herself but to it. She froze. Nothing happened. No repercussions. She could have her peerless pear pie and eat it too!**
