**Madeline hadn't been expecting that, no; however, the cat was quick to adjust, and as her sword was pinned to the ground, she used her forward momentum to slide onto her bum and swept out with a leg to try and sweep him off his feet! This turns her a quarter of a circle, and she scrambles into a squat in preparation for her next move.
**This honestly may be a bit of a dirty way to fight, but the wildcat saw a number of brawls within the ranks of her family's fighters, and she's had some otters teaching her how to fight here in Redwall, so perhaps that would explain it. Regardless, Madeline is taking full advantage, trying to knock the weasel to the ground.**

**Dirty fighting indeed, just the way Stanwick liked it! Madeline was a quick thinker, even if a bit impulsive. As she abruptly used her momentum to sweep the weasel off his feet, he would land with a harsh thump directly onto his back! Armor padded the fall of course, but it was still far from pleasant. However, such a thing DID unfortunately work in the weasel's favor actually; this was a spar, not a battle. As such all he needed was one hit, and one he would surly land!**
**Keeping his shield raised slightly to protect from any attacks from above, he would lash out with his wooden blade towards Madeline's hip. Seeing as it was center mass and Madeline was currently squatted, her only options would be to hopefully leap back out of his range, and thus give him a moment to get back to his feet, block the attack and release her offense, or... simply get hit and maybe trade with the weasel if she went for his legs. Not an ideal situation for sure**

**Actually, Madeline was sitting on the ground, not squatting, so there was no leaping back for her. Giving an undignified, kitten-like mew, the wildcat tried to scramble backwards, only to be smacked with the sword on the thigh.** "Ow!" **She continued to scramble backwards and manages to stand, ignoring the growing bruise to hold her sword out. This may be a spar, but Madeline takes it seriously. As if she's training for a true battle.**

**Stanwick smirked as his strike rung true to Madeline's thigh, a sense of confidence immediately taking root in the weasel's mind. Of course the feline's reaction didn't hurt either; that little mew and yelp of pain actually seemed to fuel the weasel's emotions! Giving a light chuckle, Stanwick would slowly force himself to his feet, remaining slightly hunched behind his shield**
"You're quick on your feet, Madeline." **He complimented before giving a small huff as he rolled his shoulders; landing on his back from her sweep wasn't exactly a pleasant experience. Pretty sure he felt something pop, but injuries would be for later, now it was time for action!.. action that Stanwick seemingly wasn't taking. He was waiting, silently goading Madeline into attacking first yet again**

"Thank you." **Madeline watched him closely, not making a move. A slight breeze rustled the grass around them and shifted her fur slightly, but still she did not move. Her green eyes took in everything, trying to discern what he would do next. The tip of her tail lashed slightly. Her thigh hurt, but she ignored it. I'll let him attack first this time, she thought to herself. See what he does. And so she waited, sword held at the ready. The wildcat was impulsive, yes, but sometimes she could wait. She was determined to make this one of those times. The members of the Order sometimes chided her on her impatience, so why not practice that in a fight?**

**Stanwick smirked under his helm as Madeline stayed firm; seemed she was waiting on him. Shuffling to the side with his shield arm towards her, Stanwick would begin to circle the wildcat, allowing his posture to straighten and relax as if he was simply taking a walk around the grounds of the Abbey. Such a thing couldn't be further from the truth however; despite his seemingly careless attitude, his eyes betrayed his nature. He was studying Madeline, searching for any weak point he could exploit. Her thigh was an obvious one, she had already been hit there, though he doubted the pain was enough for her to favor her other leg. Besides, he didn't want to hurt the wildcat... at least not much.**
**Suddenly without warning the weasel would take a swift step towards Madeline, leaning in as if to swing his sword! Only the blade never followed through, it was a feint. Again, he was studying the feline, trying to see how she would react to the advance; would she retreat back out of measure? Would she raise her sword to block? Maybe she would call his bluff and not defend at all? With so many variables, testing the waters was a must for the weasel; all battle was a matter of probability. Best to eliminate as much randomness as he could and learn the feline's patterns**

**The waiting was starting to drive Madeline crazy. When would the weasel do something?? She kept herself facing him, slowly turning as he strolled around her, keeping her gaze warily on his every move. Her thigh did hurt, but she forced herself to push through the pain and move normally. She refused to give in, she refused to do anything save exercise patience and watch her opponent closely.
**The wildcat looked for weak points. Did he limp? Did he have any gaps in his armour? How was he handling having been tossed on his back like that? But then there was the feint. Her eyes widened slightly, and her sword jerked to block. But when the strike didn't come, she scowled darkly. It had just been a trick! She needed to get better at reading those. Madeline clenched her jaw, determined to not be fooled or tricked into striking first.**

**Fights weren't just physical, there was an important mental aspect too. Getting into your opponent's head could be just as vital as getting passed their defenses. As such, Stanwick was making quite an effort to sabotage Madeline mentally. As she jerked her sword to defend, the weasel would smirk smugly; so she seemed focus on defending herself, something he could exploit! Speaking of, as for the weasel himself, he was seemingly lacking in that department. Whether it be a cool façade or experience from previous battles, he was hiding his struggles. His back hurt of course from the fall, the only hint to that Madeline would get would be a subtle roll of his shoulders. As for his chainmail he wore, it stopped just below his hips, and his lower arms were exposed. Beyond that however, his defenses were sturdy.**
**Digressing, after seeing Madeline's reaction, it was time to press the offense. Winding back once more, Stanwick would prepare another strike!.. only to feint yet again. Once more he raised his blade, yet no attack came! With each attempt to grab her attention, he would take a half step closer, showing his aggression and keeping her focused on his sword should he follow through with any of the several feinted attacks he threw her way. Once he was close to the wildcat, he would shoot forward like an arrow, shield presented in front of him in an attempt to charge her down with it and knock her on her back!**

**Madeline noted these gaps in his armour, but with the next feint, she jerked her sword to defend herself....then growled low in her throat. Fine, if that was how he was going to play...
**The wildcat stood her ground as he came step by step closer. Just before he lunged, however, she darted to the unprotected side and went to smack his arm with her sword right below the edge of the chain mail. It will hurt and bruise if it makes contact, but she's making sure to not truly injure him. These wooden swords can still break bone if swung hard enough.**

**Stanwick was a calculating person, always wanting to assess risk and reward with each and every action of his. Of course, despite his experience and natural intuition, he couldn't predict everything. Charging forward his shield in front, he expected the harsh resistance of Madeline's body against the firm and unforgiving wood! Any moment now! Only such a thing never came. While the whole instance may have only taken a second, to Stanwick it felt like minutes; where was she? Did he miss? How could he have missed? All would soon become clear upon seeing the swiftest movement out of the corner of his eye; the wildcat had side stepped him!**
**Jerking his blade to the side towards Madeline's own, the weasel would defend himself... almost. He managed to deflect the majority of the force luckily, but her blade still made contact with his elbow. Coming to a sharp halt, a faint pout would come to the weasel's face as he glanced to his elbow before tapping it with his shield, signifying that she had indeed hit him there.**
"That was quite lucky, I was expecting you to hold your ground and try to defend yourself from the blade." **He explained with a smirk, pointing at Madeline with his wooden sword as he spoke**

**Madeline grinned.** "Maybe you should've kept looking while you were leaping." **The wildcat lowered her sword, backed away, and sat down on the hay bale to get a drink.** "I guess maybe I'm not that bad against shields, after all." **The young cat was obviously quite pleased with herself, and why shouldn't she? After little to no training against beasts without shields, and here she was, holding her own and thinking on her feet. Maybe she wasn't as dumb as she thought.** "Aren't you hot under all that chain mail? Why wear it when you can hide behind a shield?"

"Tsk. Maybe." **The weasel responded, following with a faint shake of his head at the feline's cockiness. As Madeline lowered her sword and took a seat, Stanwick would sit himself beside her, dropping the edge of the shield onto the ground so it now would lean upon his shin. With his now free arm he would reach up and finally remove his helmet, placing it in his lap before wiping his brow where some sweat had collected**
"Yes, it's quite warm under all the layers. The protection is worth it though." **He replied to her question, only to then full face towards her when she asked why bother with armor. His gaze was... not kind exactly, more of a "Are you an idiot?" type of stare**
"Because you just got around the shield, Madeline. If I wasn't wearing chainmail and you had a real sword, my arm would have been gone; no one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes. For fighters like you and I though, the stakes are higher." **He explained, following with a small sigh as he turned his wooden sword in his palm, lightly tapping it against the haybale in restlessness**
"Besides, the extra weight helps with conditioning." **He added as an afterthought as his gaze turned to the sky above, squinting at the clouds**
