"Ooh, fresh. But 'ere's a problem, you're all beavers, an' I'm a otter wiff arf a tail. We ain't built for the open sea!"
Bucktooth pointed at--

"...far!"
Bucktooth and his beaver kin helped Riverback swim back to the beach. They shook themselves out and wiped seawater from their eyes before turning their sights on the great Salamandastron. Sunset cast warm red light on them as they approached, where they were greeted by--

"O' course we come in peace!" she chuffed. "And in a hurry. Before we stumbled across Riverback here, we were chased by a terrifying beaver-eating monster!"
The hares exchanged glances.
"Er...yes," the first one said. "Sorry chaps. We've heard that--

there was a terrible monstah in these parts, but since the death of our Bagdah Lord, we haven't been able to do anything about it!" Riverback looked shocked. "The Badger Lord is dead?!" Bucktooth nervously glanced up the river. "Can we discuss this inside the mountain? That monster might...

Both hares nodded in unison. The first one stuck out a friendly paw. "Quite right. I'm Swiftscut, and this here's Sandpaw."
"Oaktooth," said the leader of the beavers as she shook Swiftscut's paw.
"Hurry up then chaps!" Sandpaw said, and beckoned them into--

Which it did.
"EVERYBEAST RUN!!!" Screamed Riverback as the monster came into sight in the distance. Every creature broke into a run for Salamandastron's front door. They barely had reached...

"Don't stop!" Bucktooth exclaimed.
Riverback did not stop, but it turned out Bucktooth was the slowest of the beavers. At the back, they felt the ground rumble--

Swiftscut and Sandpaw grabbed Riverback and Bucktooth and heaved them through the door as more hares closed it behind everyone, just in time. "That weren't so bad, right?"
Bucktooth shivered and stood back up. "What is that thing?" he asked of Swiftscut and Sandpaw.
The hares exchanged hesitant looks, and Swiftscut said, with forced cheer--

"Excellent question, laddie Buck! We've been tryin' to find that out for a while now. We think we've found some answers, but 'tis all in Badger Script, an' with no badger 'round to translate for us, well..."
Bucktooth waved his paws frantically. "You mean you have no idea what that thing is?!"

"I will assume 'no'," said Bucktooth. "Ain't there some kind of Badger Script dictionary here in the mountain?"

"I say, old scout, you may have something there!"
The hares led Riverback and Bucktooth to the library while the other beavers went to get food and rest. Surrounded by the ancient tomes and newer books, the party searched for a Badger Script dictionary. After hours, they couldn't find it. But just as they were about to...
